Before the 1500s, women didn't wear underwear or undergarments of any kind. Take a minute and really think about how horrible that might be for girls. Thank goodness we have "evolved". Women would wear just robes wrapped in different ways. Closer to 1500, they began to wear long tunics under their gowns called chemise. This was mainly to mask the smell. Haha Imagine how bad it must of smelt (no deodorant). Hhahahahaha. Plus, they would only wash the tunic once and a while AND their top dresses were washed even less frequently. Even Better.
In the middle ages, upper class women began to wear corsets. These were made out of whale boning, which is really strong and hardly breaks. It's BONE, and they covered their whole waist and all of their breasts with it. The corsets were worn under the dress and were not to be seen by the public unless there was decorative embroidery detailing. For the most part, underwear and bras did change for a while long time.
During the 1700s, woman began to wear 'drawers' which were basically cotton pants. Gross Fact: They had holes in the crotch of them so women could go to the bathroom easier with those long ass dresses on. In the 1800s, corsets began to only go just below the breasts. This made them look perky and the chemise underlay help form the boobs to make them round. Corset covers were made to hide the lacing up of the corset. They were our common day 'camisole'.
In the early 1900s, corsets began to cover the whole breast again. They had shoulder straps on them now and were much looser. Thank fuck! Imagine trying to get that bad boy off! Ya, NO! Corsets were still made out of metal at this point and metal was needed for the war. Because there was no metal, the first stages of the bra were in the midst of being created.
By the 1930s, the first 'brassieres', as we know them today, are made. They started to realize that bras needed to be different sizes in the cups because not all women had the same breasts. Chemise's are still being worn today (by prudes, grandma's, and for sheer clothing) but are now called 'slips'. Panties began to get shorter and shorter (remember, at this point they were still 'long shorts'). The technology that was then available had much to do with bras becoming more fitted. They also began to use different fabrics that hugged closer to the body which made a huge difference in how the bra felt. With radio and TV, bras commercials were being run. This promoted more and more woman to buy new bras even if they didn't need them. This was also the begin of teen bras! haha oh La Senza Girl how I miss you so.
Over time the bra kept changing shape in the cups and slowly but surely became more fitting against the boobs. They started to make different kinds of bras in the 1970's, such as strapless and halter bras. It wasn't until the 1990's that they started to make padded bras giving the bra much more shape. This was mainly because they wanted to sell more so companies started to give up comfort and proper support for sexy bras with itchy lace.
Thank fuck this shit has changed over the years! Can you imagine how long it would have been to take of all those layers all the time! And soo not sexy. Unlike Eva Mendes here.
*sigh*
I know.
And on that note, sometimes it's nice not to wear a bra.
