Last week I saw Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus and 2012. Despite having a mouthful of a title, this is one of the most honest and interesting movies I've ever seen. It begins with a quest...to get really high on some magical cactus juice thats supposed to give this crazy, existential, revelational trip. This is mainly the quest of Michael Cera's character, Jamie, who is a high-strung, OCD, know-it-all type.
But it's Michael Cera, so it's adorable.
Along comes this wacky hippie dippie chick with unshaved armpits, magical stones, weird clothes and THE WORST eyebrows (plus she calls herself Crystal Fairy). But she has all these wonderful and redeeming qualities like being completely non-judgemental, nurturing and forgiving. You end up looking up to her despite her off-kilter appearance and personality.
BUT, the standouts of the movie are the BEAUTIFUL Chilean Silva brothers that make their debut in Crystal Fairy. They play brothers, and are all real brothers to the movie's director, Sebastian Silva.
LETS JUST SAY that these guys are SMOKESHOWS. I couldn't find many pictures of them online, but I totally fell in love with the one on the right. He seems so gentle and is SO patient with Michael Cera's character he deserves a medal.
The whole movie is a trip (I would suggest ingesting some sort of mood altering substance before watching). Michael Cera and Mara Hoffmann (Crystal Fairy) offer some hilarious and necessary awkward moments that literally had me looking away, laughing at them. Each character goes through this revelational journey throughout the movie, and you find yourself identifying with them and learning things about yourself along the way. They take you on the cactus trip with them, and it's a fun ride.
